Englewood is a city of 30,035 built on a slope. The Palisades rise to roughly 410 feet on its eastern side and descend to a centre barely above sea level — a difference of several hundred feet inside about a mile. More than anywhere else we serve, the terrain decides what you should be driving.

Apex Motors of South Hackensack is a short run west, and the honest answer on distance is that it depends which way you go. Routing software prefers I-80 and the Turnpike local roadway at around 7.5 miles; most Englewood drivers take Route 4 west instead, which is shorter in miles. Either way it is well under twenty minutes outside peak. We carry seven brands on one lot — including BMW and Lexus, which is unusual for an independent dealership and directly relevant here.

Why buy a used car in Englewood

The hill is the argument for all-wheel drive

Englewood’s roads on the Palisades ice earlier and clear later than the valley does. That is not a marketing line, it is a consequence of several hundred feet of elevation inside a short distance. All-wheel drive typically adds $1,500 to $2,500 over a comparable front-drive vehicle in used inventory, and in this city most buyers decide it is the least controversial money they will spend on a car.

Two inches of accumulation is the trigger. Parking is prohibited on the scheduled streets from that point until they are cleared.

Snow, and a two-inch trigger

Englewood’s code is specific in a way most towns’ are not. Parking is prohibited on the scheduled streets whenever snow has accumulated to a depth of two inches or more. Separately, no vehicle may sit on any city street for more than 48 consecutive hours. And vehicles over four tons registered gross weight are barred from city streets between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., with a further restriction on commercial vehicles in single-family zones over the same hours. If you are buying anything large, or anything with commercial plates, check those thresholds first.

No rail, and no rail coming soon

Passenger service on the Northern Branch through Englewood ended in 1966 and has not returned. The proposed Hudson-Bergen Light Rail extension would add Englewood Route 4 and Englewood Town Center stops, but it remains a proposal. In the meantime, NJ Transit’s 166 runs to the Port Authority, and the 171, 175, 178 and 186 to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station — which the city notes is about five miles from its centre. Mean travel time to work is 30.9 minutes, and 54.5% of households own their home.

The jobs are uphill

Englewood Cliffs, immediately east and above, hosts CNBC’s world headquarters, LG Electronics’ North American headquarters in a 352,000 square foot building opened in 2018, and Unilever’s American headquarters. Englewood itself supports roughly 14,500 jobs across around 250 retail establishments, more than 500 professional firms and about 110 industrial establishments. Englewood Health is on Engle Street. That is a lot of short, steep, daily driving inside one city.

Neighbourhoods we cover

East Hill has its own page — the section climbing toward the Englewood Cliffs line, where the elevation argument is sharpest and where large lots mean you can actually park a three-row SUV. Worth reading if that is where you live.

What a used car actually costs in Englewood

New Jersey charges 6.625% sales tax on a used vehicle, and it is calculated after your trade-in allowance comes off — so a trade-in lowers the tax as well as the price. Three things have to line up: the trade-in is a motor vehicle, it goes to a registered dealer for resale, and the purchase and the trade-in happen at the same time. Sell your old car privately first and the credit is gone.

Table of New Jersey Used Car Lemon Law warranty tiers by odometer reading at sale: 90 days or 3,000 miles, 60 days or 2,000 miles, and 30 days or 1,000 miles
The warranty is automatic on a qualifying used car. Its length depends on the odometer reading at the time of sale.

New Jersey’s Used Car Lemon Law gives you a dealer warranty automatically if the car cost $3,000 or more, is no more than seven model years old and has under 100,000 miles. The length depends on the odometer at sale: 90 days or 3,000 miles under 24,000 miles; 60 days or 2,000 miles from 24,001 to 59,999; 30 days or 1,000 miles from 60,000 to 100,000. There is a $50 deductible per covered repair. A dealer can only sell As Is above 60,000 miles, and only with a written waiver signed separately from the contract.

There is no legal ceiling on documentation fees in New Jersey. There is, however, a rule about where the fee has to sit: an advertised price must cover everything the consumer pays except licensing, registration and taxes, and the services behind the fee have to be itemised on your paperwork in at least 10-point type. Compare advertised prices, not doc fees.

You will not need an MVC appointment for this. Title and registration are filed by the dealer on a retail purchase; agencies are for private sales and licence business. There is no MVC in Englewood. Lodi handles licensing only; Wallington at 450 Main Avenue is the nearest agency that can title and register. County inspection is at 20 W. Century Road in Paramus.
