Palisades Park packs 20,317 people into 1.24 square miles. That works out at roughly 16,400 per square mile, third densest of Bergen County’s seventy municipalities and fourteenth of 565 in the state. Only about a third of households own their home. Broad Avenue is the commercial spine, and the borough has published its own website in Korean since 2017.

Apex Motors of South Hackensack is three miles away — straight out Route 46 and down Broad Avenue, six minutes with clear roads. Of every municipality we serve, this is the shortest drive to our lot. Seven brands on one site: Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, BMW, Nissan and Lexus.

Why buy a used car in Palisades Park

Cars parked along a residential street in Palisades Park, New Jersey, at night during the permit-restricted overnight window
The permit scheme covers exactly the hours a car sits overnight — midnight to 9:00 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Where the car sleeps decides what you can buy

This is the single most practical thing anyone can tell you about owning a car here. Palisades Park operates a resident permit scheme covering exactly the hours a car sits overnight — midnight to 9:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. A permit costs $20 for three years, $10 for over-65s, and you need a New Jersey licence showing a borough address, your registration and your insurance.

The detail worth knowing before you shop: the borough states that vehicles with temporary licence plates do not require a residential parking permit. You drive off our lot on a 30-day temporary registration, which buys you time to get the permit sorted rather than finding out the hard way on night one. Confirm the current ordinance with the borough — municipal codes get amended — but as it stands that is a genuinely useful piece of timing.

The housing stock is unusual, and so is the parking that comes with it

Palisades Park has allowed one- and two-unit homes on 5,000 square foot lots since its 1939 zoning ordinance, and side-by-side duplexes now make up roughly 55% of the one-to-four-unit housing stock against only about 21% single-family detached. Each duplex has to provide four garage spaces and four driveway spaces. Eight sounds generous until you see the layout: split between two households, usually arranged in tandem, so a long car in the back boxes in the one behind it. Mid-size is the sweet spot. Length, not the number of spaces, is the constraint.

No rail, and the bridge is close

There is no rail station in the borough. NJ Transit buses 127, 154, 155, 157, 166 and 168 run to the Port Authority, the 83 goes to Jersey City, and Rockland Coaches also serve Midtown. Everything else is by car, over the George Washington Bridge via Fort Lee. Mean travel time to work is 30.7 minutes and median household income is $94,743 — a market where a well-chosen used car makes far more sense than a new one.

Neighbourhoods we cover

We have a dedicated page for the Koreatown district along Broad Avenue — thirteen blocks between Harriet Avenue and Oakdene Avenue — which goes further into the overnight permit rules and the 2.5-ton weight threshold that comes with them.

What a used car actually costs in Palisades Park

Diagram of New Jersey used car purchase costs: 6.625% sales tax after trade-in, $60 or $85 title fee, and weight-based registration
Sales tax is applied to the price after your trade-in allowance, not before — which makes trading in worth more than the headline figure suggests.

There is no legal ceiling on documentation fees in New Jersey. There is, however, a rule about where the fee has to sit: an advertised price must cover everything the consumer pays except licensing, registration and taxes, and the services behind the fee have to be itemised on your paperwork in at least 10-point type. Compare advertised prices, not doc fees.

Sales tax is 6.625%, and the number it is applied to is the price after your trade-in allowance, not before. That makes trading in worth more than the headline figure suggests. The credit only applies if the trade goes to a registered dealer for resale and the two transactions are executed together — a private sale followed by a purchase does not count.

Budget $60 for the title, rising to $85 where a lender records a lien against it. Registration is priced by vehicle weight and model year, not by what you paid — typically $46.50 to $84 annually for a used passenger car. The MVC’s own calculator gives the precise number.

Buying from a licensed dealer means skipping the MVC queue entirely — we file the title and the registration. An agency visit is only necessary for a private-party purchase. The nearest MVC to Palisades Park is Lodi at 8 Mill Street, but that is a licensing centre only — it cannot title or register a vehicle. Wallington at 450 Main Avenue does both. Watch the name trap: the North Bergen licensing centre on Bergenline Avenue is in Hudson County, not Bergen. Inspection for the whole of Bergen County is at 20 W. Century Road in Paramus.

Sunday closing

Both lots close on Sundays. New Jersey law makes buying or selling motor vehicles on a Sunday a disorderly persons offence statewide — every dealership in New Jersey is shut, not just those in Bergen County. Weekday evenings are the quietest time to visit.
