Apex Motors of South Hackensack is about 5.5 miles away straight down Teaneck Road and onto Route 46, or across on Route 4 and through Hackensack when the Teaneck Road lights are against you. Call it ten minutes off-peak, fifteen to twenty when Route 4 is loaded. We carry seven brands on one lot: Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, BMW, Nissan and Lexus. That matters more here than it sounds, because the right answer for a West Englewood driveway is often “the car that fits” rather than “the car from the brand I always buy.”
Why buy a used car in West Englewood
Three things about this corner of Teaneck shape what you should be driving.
Your driveway is probably narrower than you think
Teaneck’s R-S single-family zone requires a 75-foot lot width, but a good deal of West Englewood predates that standard and sits on less. On a 40 to 50-foot lot with a house on it, the driveway is realistically one car wide. A compact or mid-size crossover clears it comfortably. A full-size pickup or a long-wheelbase van does not, and you will be folding mirrors every night to find out. Measure yours at its narrowest point before you shop. It is the most useful number you can bring us.
The overnight commercial vehicle ban is real
Teaneck’s code prohibits commercial vehicles from any street or public place between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. If you run a business and the vehicle comes home with you, it needs to live off-street. That rules out a lot of otherwise sensible work vehicles unless you have the space for them. Check the current ordinance wording with the township before you commit municipal codes get amended.
Winter parking is not optional
Teaneck bans street parking whenever snow is falling and accumulating, until the street is plowed, and vehicles are towed at the owner’s expense. Only about 25 named streets and segments are exempt. Meter fees and time limits in municipal lots are waived from six hours before predicted snowfall until 24 hours after it stops, which helps, but it still means moving the car. A vehicle you can get in and out of a tight driveway in four inches of snow is worth more here than one you cannot.
There is no passenger rail in Teaneck. The old West Englewood station on the West Shore line closed to passengers in 1959 and the line carries freight only now. What you have instead is the bus: NJ Transit’s 167T runs Teaneck Road to Midtown Manhattan, the 167Q covers Queen Anne Road, and the 175 and 178 head for the George Washington Bridge. For everything else, Holy Name Medical Center on Teaneck Road, Whittier Elementary on West Englewood Avenue, Votee Park, the Fairleigh Dickinson campus down by the river, you drive.
What to look at, by body style
SUVs and crossovers
The default answer in West Englewood, with a caveat about size. A RAV4, CR-V, Rogue, CX-5 or BMW X3 gives you ground clearance for an unplowed side street and a footprint that still fits a pre-war driveway. All-wheel drive typically adds $1,500 to $2,500 over a comparable front-drive car. On these streets in January, most buyers decide that is money well spent.
Sedans
Still the right call if your driveway is genuinely tight, or if you ride the 167T to the Port Authority most days and only need the car at weekends. A used Civic or Accord runs roughly $15,000 to $22,000 in our inventory and a Camry sits in a similar band. Lower running costs, easier parking, and nothing about a Teaneck winter that a good set of tyres will not handle.
Three-row family SUVs
Teaneck’s Master Plan puts 47% of households at two to three people, but the larger households here are genuinely large, and a Pilot, Highlander, Explorer or Sorento covers the school run, the airport run and the grandparents in one vehicle. Measure the driveway first. Three-row SUVs are long, and the difference between a Highlander and a full-size body-on-frame SUV is often the difference between fitting and not.
Trucks and pickups
Read the overnight commercial vehicle ban above before you buy. If the truck is personally registered and lives in your driveway or garage, you are fine. If it is commercially plated and would sit on the street after 9:00 p.m., you have a problem. A mid-size pickup is the practical compromise for a Teaneck lot.
